Botswana, or the Republic of Botswana (Tswana: Lefatshe la Botswana), is a country located in sub-Saharan Africa. A former British protectorate known as Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name after gaining independence within the Commonwealth of Nations on September 30, 1966. It has held free and fair democratic elections since independence.
Botswana's economy is currently one of the fastest growing economies in the world, averaging around 5% annually over the past decade. After a period of stagnation at the beginning of the 21st century, Botswana's economy has registered high levels of growth, exceeding its target GDP growth of 6-7%. Economic growth since the late 1960s has been comparable to some of Asia's largest economies.
Botswana is part of the Southern African Customs Union. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, there are very few tariff barriers to trade with Botswana. Diamonds are the country's main export. As of 2017, Botswana was the world's second-largest diamond producer after Russia. Given Botswana's heavy reliance on diamonds, global demand is vital to the economy.
